What makes a good kindergarten

Firstly, most schools just want the parents to leave the kids at their gate and remain outside as outsiders looking in. Being more actively involved does not mean that we do not trust the school but that we as parents want to be part of our children's learning and growing process. If you can find a school that is open to parent participation, that would be great!

Secondly, if what you pay the school is for the school to produce only excellent result from your child, you might as well invest in a computer and some good quality software! What I'm getting at is that a child's healthy development cannot be merely measured by the report card that is created to tell the child whether he or she is a good or mediocre or bad student.

Knowledge can be acquired via many different means and in today's world, the electronic gadgets available play a big role in that. However, what children lack most is warm human touch of parents and teachers, not cold drilling and memorisation of facts. The human factor is missing in our education system which explains a lot of the emotional problems faced by students at schools today.

I would say that a good school would provide an extended home environment for the child to bring out the goodness in him or her through open and loving communication and an encouragement for self-expression through art, music and movement. A child who can grow in maturity through healthy interactions with adults as well as other children of different ages in a safe and loving environment is the most solid "evidence" that the child is learning and growing well. If the school does not have report cards to show, that would probably be a school to consider for your child!

And oh yes, one more thing - if the school does not believe in letting the child play and explore his world, you can forget about sending your child there. For what is a child's life if the child is not allowed to wonder and play?

Bread town Visit

2 April 2010, Krista Nusaputra kids visited High 5 bread factory. Total of 42 student participated in this trip.

Amongst other they learn the bread history and present bread making process.

Here we share the learning our kids went thru.

History of Bread

Grown in Mesopotamia and Egypt, wheat was likely first merely chewed. Later it was discovered that it could be pulverized and made into a paste. Set over a fire, the paste hardened into a flat bread that kept for several days. It did not take much of a leap to discover leavened (raised) bread when yeast was accidentally introduced to the paste.

Instead of waiting for fortuitous circumstances to leaven their bread, people found that they could save a piece of dough from a batch of bread to put into the next day's dough. This was the origin of sour-dough, a process still used today.

In Egypt, around 1000 BC, inquiring minds isolated yeast and were able to introduce the culture directly to their breads. Also a new strain of wheat was developed that allowed for refined white bread. This was the first truly modern bread. Up to thirty varieties of bread may have been popular in ancient Egypt.

The Greeks picked up the technology for making bread from the Egyptians; from Greece the practice spread over the rest of Europe. Bread and wheat were especially important in Rome where it was thought more vital than meat. Soldiers felt slighted if they were not given their allotment. The Roman welfare state was based on the distribution of grain to people living in Rome. Later the government even baked the bread.

In the middle ages bread was commonly baked in the ovens of the lord of the manor for a price. It was one of the few foods that sustained the poor through the dark age.

Breakfast Day

We will be having "Breakfast Day" on Monday 29 Mac 2010.

School wouldn't be providing breakfast during break time. Each children would be bringing their own favorite food.

They will explain their food content and share its nutrient content.

This is part of theme of week activity relating to FOOD.

Early Childhood Care and Education (ECCE)

1. Legislation concerning ECCE:

The 1984 Child Care Act (308 Act) refers to all ECCE programmes for children under age 4. The Education Act (1996) has included pre-school education as part of the national school system. All kindergartens (3+ to 6+ years old) have to follow curriculum guidelines provided by the Ministry of Education.

2. Official body/bodies in charge of supervision or coordination:

The Ministry of Education, the Ministry of Rural and Regional Development and the National Unity Department for children under age 6 (3+ to 4+ years old and 4+ to 5+ years old).
The Department of Social Welfare and the Ministry of Rural and Regional Development for children under age 4 (0 to 3+ years old).

3. Other entities involved in the provision (e.g. municipalities, local governments) and main types of providers (e.g. public, private, mixed, community-based, etc.):

Pre-school education is provided by government agencies such as the Ministry of Education, Ministry of Rural Development, Ministry of National Unity and Community Development as well as the private sector and non-governmental organizations. All pre-school centres are registered with the Ministry of Education. The government operated 81.6% of the pre-school programs in 1995. Of these, 61.8% were operated by the Community Development Division of the Ministry of Rural Development, 9.5% by the Ministry of National Unity and Social Development, and 10.3% by the Ministry of Education. The other 18.4% were operated by the private sector. Public pre-school programs are free to parents and funded by the Government. Private programs charge fees.

4. Information concerning the curriculum (if applicable) or the contents of ECCE programs

The pre-school programme is based on a curriculum which is appropriate for 4–6 years old and compatible with their development, interests and unique needs. The curriculum is dynamic, child-centered and responsive to the diversity of populations that are represented in each classroom. Basically, the principles of the pre-school curriculum are:

(a) the understanding of children’s characteristics (they are active, curious and they need love, attention and security);
(b) the aim is to expose children to a rich and stimulating environment; and
(c) the programme provides a variety of support materials, such as concrete, printed, multi-sensory, interactive and user-friendly materials.

5. Objectives and aims:

The aim of the preschool education is to strengthen the acquisition of basic skills such as socialization process and personality development. The basic skills taught at this level are communication, social and other skills (3Rs) in preparation for primary schooling. The general objectives of pre-school education are to enable the children to:
• develop love for their country;
• be well mannered and practice moral values;
• master basic communication skills;
• respect the national language;
• master the basics of the English language;
• appreciate physical activities as a basis for good health;
• develop physically and practice good health and safety measures;
• develop critical thinking skills through enquiry and the use of all the senses

6. Average number of hours per week and average amount of weeks per year:

The recommended amount of instructional time is four hours per day, five days a week. The suggested timetable is as follows:
Class activities: 120 minutes (inside and outside classroom);
Group activities: 60 minutes;
Free activities: 30 minutes; and
Break/snacks/rest: 30 minutes.

Milestone

It has been a while since i wrote anything to update my parents as well as general public of our progress. I would like to explain about our centre milestone.

What is milestone. For Krista Nusaputra, achievement is about attaining agreed set of ability. Therefore we emphasize on rewarding children on their accomplishment on attaining set goal rather than rewarding them based on score attained.

In Krista Nusaputra, there is no competition amongst them. The competition is against set goals. So long the children achieve the set goals, they are certified as winner.

Examples, for english reading class, we have set goals to be achieved by every age group. By end of the year, so long as they achieve the minimum standard set, they will be recognise as a winner. They achieve their set goal.

There a difference is ability to grasp new things amongst all kids. However, we believe each and everyone of our kids can be coach to achieve minimum standard. Time taken by each kids may differ but they all will get there by end of year. That is our hope and MILESTONE.

For Reading English class, below is standard set for each age group.
Age Milestone
4 Able to independently read Peter and Jane book 5a.
5 Able to independently read Peter and Jane book 7b.
6 Able to independently read Peter and Jane book 11a.

For mathematics, a simmilar milestone is set. So long the kids can be assessed against this milestone and able to master the required skill set in milestone, they are on track. Of course there will be kids whom able to move further than required milestone. We strive in making sure they will be on faster track but at the same time effort will be put to ensure the rest of kids meet our required milestone.

With milestone, we believe the kids will be better equipped for the primary schooling. There will be kids whom able to score 100% on every subject, but if all kids can score perfect score on milestone related question, then we know they are ready for next level.

I will post soon on mathematics milestone in next posting.

Institusi Pendidikan Swasta / Private Education Institution

Few parent recently asked me about the difference between Tadika and Pusat Perkembangan Ilmu. Well i thought i share the difference in all private education system that exist in Malaysia.

Our private education comes under the purview of Ministry of Education. There is several categories which include the following:
1. Tadika. (Kindergarten)
2. Sekolah swasta (Private school) (Agama, Primary, Secondary and International/Antarabangsa)
3. Perkembangan/ Kemahiran (Child enrichment, MLVK, Computers school etc)
4. Pusat Tuisyen (Tuition center)
How do we recognize them? Easy just refer to their license. If their operating license read out Pusat Perkembangan ilmu, then they are under category 3.
What is the difference between 1 and 3? Some claiming to be tadika but has license under category 3. Well it is all under same Ministry with differing guidelines. Tadika has to comply with National curriculum and their operation must be in Taman (House). Pusat perkembangan is all about enriching specific skill sets and therefore free from curriculum adherence (they follow their own curriculum) plus they operate out of shop lots. You can see there is big difference when it comes to preparing your kids for school (primary which is what tadika is set out to do) against enrichment (such as mathematics skills) which not necessarily prepares your child entry to schooling world.
Why then there is some tadika in shop lot? The answer is they are pusat perkembangan and not tadika. Thus they are not govern by National curriculum. It depends on what the parent want as end result. Pusat Perkembangan has its own strength in preparing specifics skill set such as English, Mathematic or computer. Tadika has to include other aspect such as Moral, Physical Education and Religious subject.
So if the license on the sign board start with Pusat Perkembangan then they are not license under Tadika? Yes. Tadika license start with TADIKA XXXXXX. Similarly tuition license start with Pusat Tuisyen XXXXX.
I hope I had managed to clear the air about this topic. After all I guess many parent are already planning to register their children in school and thus has this specific question raised.

It is a Party time

Krista Nusaputra will be having birthday bash for our kids whom had celebrated their birthday within the first quarter of this year.
