What makes a good kindergarten

Firstly, most schools just want the parents to leave the kids at their gate and remain outside as outsiders looking in. Being more actively involved does not mean that we do not trust the school but that we as parents want to be part of our children's learning and growing process. If you can find a school that is open to parent participation, that would be great!

Secondly, if what you pay the school is for the school to produce only excellent result from your child, you might as well invest in a computer and some good quality software! What I'm getting at is that a child's healthy development cannot be merely measured by the report card that is created to tell the child whether he or she is a good or mediocre or bad student.

Knowledge can be acquired via many different means and in today's world, the electronic gadgets available play a big role in that. However, what children lack most is warm human touch of parents and teachers, not cold drilling and memorisation of facts. The human factor is missing in our education system which explains a lot of the emotional problems faced by students at schools today.

I would say that a good school would provide an extended home environment for the child to bring out the goodness in him or her through open and loving communication and an encouragement for self-expression through art, music and movement. A child who can grow in maturity through healthy interactions with adults as well as other children of different ages in a safe and loving environment is the most solid "evidence" that the child is learning and growing well. If the school does not have report cards to show, that would probably be a school to consider for your child!

And oh yes, one more thing - if the school does not believe in letting the child play and explore his world, you can forget about sending your child there. For what is a child's life if the child is not allowed to wonder and play?
